Who is God?

Who is God?

Who is God? God is creator and sustainer of everything and everyone. He is infinite, eternal, unchangeable and wise. He’s all-powerful, all-knowing, merciful and just. He is good, holy and faithful. God is love.

Psalm 86:8-10 says, “There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God.” (Psalm 86:8–10, ESV)

What comes into your mind when you think about God is the most important thing about you, because what you think about God determines what you think about everything and everyone else. The most important word in any language is its word for God.

So what comes into your mind when you think about God?  Do you think of him as an angry God? Or more like a Santa God? Is He strict or relaxed? Does He care or is He distant? What do you think God is like?

Sometimes what you say about God and what you really feel about God can be two different things. You can say that God is good, but when you feel fearful, bitter, worried, scared and stuff like that it is often because of what you really think about Him. And when you are discontent, when you complain, it is because you are not thinking rightly about God. If you really believed that God were perfect, that He loved you perfectly and that He had all the power in the world to stop whatever is scaring you or making you bitter or worried then you would be able to say, “It is well with my soul, because I know God is in control and He can be trusted, because He is good.” But if you think that God has lost control or that someone is doing something that God didn’t allow, then you are going to be scared, worried, angry or have some other bad emotion. But when you know who He truly is, that He is perfect and can be trusted, then you are content because you know that everything in life is in His perfect and loving hands and so nothing that happens is ultimately bad for you, but for your good, because He is good and He is in control.

But let’s face it, we don’t all know God as well as we could. So understanding who He is, is really important for your life. An attribute of God is something that is always true about Him. And we know God by knowing His attributes, what He is truly like. There are a lot of attributes of God, so we will just look at a few of them to help start you on the journey of finding out more about who He is.

Anyone who believes in God has to understand that He is the creator of everything. Not meaning of your house, and your stuff, but of every organic, or living thing. He created the universe, the world, the weather, the plants, the animals. He created it all. And He created it all at the beginning of human time. You’ve heard of the creation story in Genesis 1? Well, after that God didn’t create any more. He made everything so that it could produce more of its kind. So animals have baby animals, plants grow from seeds that fall from other plants. That means God no longer creates but He sustains, and so we call him the sustainer of all things: without him the world would fall apart. He didn’t create us and walk away. He isn’t distant and uninvolved, He is actively involved in the world, keeping it going, caring for it and all of it’s people. He is God.

Knowing who God is, who He really is, will change your life. The way you find out who God is, is by reading the Bible. And the more you read and find out who He is the more your life will change.  Psalm 86:8-10 says, there is no one like Him, no one you can compare Him to. So find out who He is. Learn all you can about your God as we study who He is and why He has done what He has done in the world.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for helping us to know who You are. Thank You for the Bible that tells us all about you. We are so grateful that You are perfect and trustworthy. Help us to see You today. To hear You and to respond to Your quiet voice, knowing that You are love. Amen
